Every Washington fee, explained
Base tabs: $30 + weight + service fees
Every renewal includes the $30 license fee, a weight fee ($25/$45/$65 for passenger vehicles), an $11 service fee and a $6 filing fee (about $12.50 when a title is processed with registration).
RTA excise tax β the Seattle-area surcharge
Inside the Sound Transit district (most of King, Pierce and Snohomish counties), you pay 1.1% of your vehicle's depreciated value each year, computed from a state MVET depreciation schedule based on MSRP β not your purchase price. It's value-based, so it falls as the car ages, and it's federally tax-deductible.
EV and hybrid fees
EVs pay $100 on first registration ($50 at renewal) plus the $75 transportation electrification fee β $175 the first year, $125 after; hybrids pay the $75 fee.
Sales/use tax: 6.5% + 0.3% + local
Washington adds a 0.3% motor-vehicle tax on top of regular sales tax; combined rates run ~8.2%β10.5% by location. Private-party purchases pay the equivalent use tax at licensing, based on fair market value.
Title and plates
Title application $15 (plus service/filing), original plates $50, replacement $30.

Washington fees and tax rates by county
Local charges are usually the reason two people in the same state pay different amounts. These are the rates the calculator applies β pick your county above to see them in your own estimate.
| County | Combined vehicle tax rate | Emissions program |
|---|---|---|
| King (Seattle) | 10.4% | Yes |
| Pierce (Tacoma) | 10.2% | Yes |
| Snohomish (Everett) | 10.5% | Yes |
| Spokane | 9% | No |
| Clark (Vancouver) | 8.7% | No |
| Thurston (Olympia) | 9.5% | No |
| Other WA county | 8.8% | No |
Rates shown are countywide. Individual cities and special districts can add a further increment β where that applies, the calculator notes it in the estimate.
Does registration get cheaper as the car ages in Washington?
No. Washington charges the same renewal regardless of what the vehicle is worth, so a twelve-year-old car costs exactly as much to keep registered as a brand-new one. That makes Washington relatively expensive for cheap cars and a bargain for expensive ones.
| Vehicle age | Approx. value | Renewal cost |
|---|---|---|
| Brand new | $35,000 | $72 |
| 3 years old | $24,500 | $72 |
| 5 years old | $19,250 | $72 |
| 8 years old | $12,250 | $72 |
| 12 years old | $7,000 | $72 |
How Washington compares with nearby states
The same purchase β a $25,000 four-year-old used car β registered in Washington and in neighbouring states. Differences are driven mostly by whether the state taxes the purchase and how heavily.
| State | Agency fees | Tax | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washington | $93.50 | $2,275 | $2,368.50 |
| Nevada | $297.75 | $1,712.50 | $2,010.25 |
| California | $354.50 | $1,812.50 | $2,167 |
| Colorado | $170.12 | $1,250 | $1,420.12 |
On this comparison Colorado is the cheapest at $1,420.12 and Washington the most expensive at $2,368.50 β a difference of $948.38 on an identical car. Registering where you actually live is a legal requirement, but the gap is worth knowing if you are moving.
Practical Washington answers
How to lower your Washington bill
The RTA excise tax is the single largest variable in Washington and it applies only inside the Sound Transit district β addresses just outside the boundary pay dramatically less for the identical car. If you live near the edge, it is worth confirming your address's status. EVs pay additional annual fees that partly offset fuel savings.
Moving to Washington?
New residents have 30 days to transfer title and register, and Washington charges use tax on the vehicle's value unless you can show sales tax was already paid elsewhere. Emissions testing has been discontinued statewide, which removes one step from the process.
How to pay and renew
Renewals go through the Department of Licensing online, by mail, or at a vehicle licensing office; many offices are privately operated sub-agents that add a service fee. Renewal notices show the RTA portion separately.

What is the RTA tax?
A 1.1% excise tax on your vehicle's depreciated value (a state MVET schedule based on MSRP), charged at renewal if you live in the Sound Transit district β most of King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. It's the reason Seattle-area tabs can cost hundreds.

How much is sales tax on a car in Washington?
6.5% state + 0.3% motor-vehicle tax + local rates β totals run from about 8.2% to 10.5% (Seattle area is over 10%). Trade-ins reduce the taxable amount.
Is any of my WA registration tax-deductible?
Yes β the RTA excise portion is value-based and can qualify as a deductible personal property tax on your federal return. The flat fees don't qualify.
How much does it cost to register a $25,000 car in Washington?
