Fee change log

Every fee update and correction, dated, with the official source that confirmed it.

Fee schedules change — usually quietly, often mid-year. This page is the public record of what we changed and when, so you can judge how current our numbers are instead of taking our word for it. See how verification works.

Pennsylvania certificate of title is $72, not $67

2026-08-20 · Pennsylvania

Verified against PennDOT’s MV-70S Schedule of Fees: the certificate of title is $72 and annual passenger registration is $48, with a $5 fee for local use in participating counties and $11 to transfer a plate. The $67 title figure still quoted widely online is out of date.

Missouri horsepower brackets and processing fee corrected

2026-08-20 · Missouri

The Department of Revenue fee chart shows the taxable-horsepower brackets differ from what we had in the middle of the range — a typical 36–47 HP car registers at $33.25 a year, not $27.25 — and the processing fee is $9 for a one-year registration rather than $6. Title remains $8.50.

Arizona public safety fee removed — it is no longer charged

2026-08-20 · Arizona

ADOT’s current registration fee schedule lists only the $8 registration fee, $1.50 air quality research fee and $4 title fee. The $32 public safety fee that appears in many older guides is not on the schedule and has been removed from our estimates. The Vehicle License Tax formula was confirmed exactly: 60% of the manufacturer’s base retail price, reduced 16.25% per year, taxed at $2.80 per $100 for new vehicles and $2.89 for used.

Washington weight tiers and EV fees completed

2026-08-20 · Washington

Confirmed against the Department of Licensing tab-fee page: $30 licence tab, $11 service fee and $6 filing fee, with weight fees of $25 / $45 / $65 / $72 — we were missing the top tier for vehicles over 8,000 lbs. Electric vehicles pay $100 on first registration and $50 at renewal, plus the $75 transportation electrification fee.

Verification lock added to the build

2026-08-20 · Site-wide

Every fee confirmed at an official source is now asserted in an automated test, together with a snapshot of the total cost for a standard $25,000 used-car purchase in each state. Changing any verified number now fails the build deliberately, forcing a fresh check against the source and an entry on this page. Two states remain difficult to verify automatically: the Illinois Secretary of State disallows automated access to its fee publications, and California publishes county tax rates only through an address lookup, so our county figures there are labelled as approximations.

North Carolina title and registration fees corrected upward

2026-08-20 · North Carolina

Verification against the official NCDMV MVR-94 fee schedule found our figures — and the numbers most calculators publish — were out of date. The certificate of title is $66.75 (not the widely-quoted $56) and private passenger registration is $46.25 (not $38.75), following the state’s scheduled fee adjustment. We also added the $20 penalty for failing to transfer a title within 28 days. Every North Carolina estimate on the site has been recalculated.

Georgia new-resident TAVT is 3%, not a split payment

2026-08-20 · Georgia

Our guidance said new residents could split TAVT into two payments — that was the pre-2019 rule. The Georgia Department of Revenue confirms new residents now pay TAVT at a reduced flat rate of 3% of fair market value, against the standard 7%. The page has been rewritten and the calculator updated.

2026-08-20 · Colorado

Confirmed against the Colorado DMV taxes-and-fees schedule: the road safety surcharge for a typical car is $19.30 (we had $23), the bridge safety surcharge is $18, and specific ownership tax runs 2.1% / 1.5% / 1.2% / 0.9% in years one to four, then 0.45% through year nine and a flat $3 from year ten — applied to 85% of MSRP. Plug-in hybrids pay a $63.05 road usage fee.

Nevada Governmental Services Tax mechanics confirmed

2026-08-20 · Nevada

The Nevada DMV fee page confirms our GST implementation exactly: 4% applied to 35% of original MSRP, depreciated 5% in year one and 10% a year after that, with a floor of 15% and a $16 minimum. We also made the supplemental GST explicit in the data — it is voter-approved in Clark and Churchill counties only, rather than being inferred from emissions-testing status.

California registration, CHP and ZEV fees updated to the current schedule

2026-08-20 · California

Several competing calculators still show the older figures.
